1Before you start
Staking is on by default in every Divi node. What usually stops it is one of three things: the wallet is encrypted and locked, the coins are too young, or the wallet isn't running. So "turning staking on" mostly means unlocking the wallet and leaving it open.
- Coins must sit still for 1 hour before they can stake, and reach full weight after 7 days. Nothing you do in the wallet speeds this up. How staking works has the rules.
- The wallet has to be awake and online all day. A laptop that sleeps does not stake while it sleeps. For an always-on setup see Stake on a VPS or Stake on a Raspberry Pi.
- Encrypt your wallet first. A staking wallet is connected to the internet all day; an encrypted one can be unlocked just enough to stake.
- Not sure which wallet to run? Choose a wallet. The short version: IronDivi if you like a terminal, Divi Desktop if you want a window, BoxWallet if you want someone else to run the node for you.
Every command on this page is safe to try on testnet with free coins from the testnet faucet. Add --testnet to the IronDivi commands and the rest is identical.
2IronDivi
IronDivi is the Divi node written in Rust. It stakes as soon as it runs with a synced chain and an unlocked wallet. If you don't have it yet, Install IronDivi.
- Start the node and leave it running:
irondivid --daemon # testnet: irondivid --testnet --daemonStaking is on unless you pass--staking falseor putstaking = falseinirondivi.conf. - Wait for the sync.
irondivi-cli getblockcountshould match the height on the explorer. Nothing stakes on a stale chain. - Encrypt the wallet if you haven't (IronDivi 0.2.6 or newer; see the note below). Pick a long passphrase and keep it somewhere safe; there is no reset.
irondivi-cli encryptwallet "your passphrase" wallet encrypted; the wallet is now locked. Use walletpassphrase to unlock it. Back up your wallet again: earlier backups are not encrypted.
Unlike the older Divi node, IronDivi keeps running after this. Take the advice literally: back up your wallet again now. - Unlock it for staking. The second number is a timeout in seconds;
0keeps it unlocked until you lock it or restart the node.irondivi-cli walletpassphrase "your passphrase" 0 - Check with
getstakingstatus. This is the real output from our testnet wallet holding 12,000 tDIVI:irondivi-cli getstakingstatus { "enoughcoins": true, "haveconnections": true, "mintablecoins": true, "mnsync": true, "stake split threshold": 20000.0, "staking status": true, "staking status text": "Staking Active", "staking_balance": 12000.0, "validtime": true, "walletunlocked": true }
In IronDivi 0.2.6, getstakingstatus prints "walletunlocked": true and Staking Active even when the wallet is locked; the staker then silently fails every time it finds a winning coin. Check the lock with irondivi-cli getwalletinfo instead: "encryption_status" must say unlocked, not locked. We hit this on the test wallet, which is why it is here.
The encrypt and unlock steps need IronDivi 0.2.6 or newer, released on 2026-10-22. The 0.2.5 release answers error code: -32601: Method not found: encryptwallet; upgrade before you encrypt.
IronDivi has no "staking only" unlock: an unlocked wallet can also spend. Keep the machine itself locked and the RPC port bound to 127.0.0.1 (the default). To pause staking without locking, run irondivi-cli setstaking false; setstaking true resumes it, and the status text changes to Staking Disabled and back.
3Divi Desktop
Divi Desktop 2.0 runs the Divi node for you and shows staking in its status bar. Everything here is in the Desktop's own code; the words in quotes are the ones you will see on screen.
- Let it sync. While it catches up the status bar shows a spinner with the tooltip "Getting latest wallet info." Hover the network icon to see "Peers: N"; you want more than zero.
- Look at the lock icon in the status bar. Its tooltip is one of "Unencrypted", "Locked", "Unlocked" or "Unlocked, staking only". If it says "Unencrypted", click it: the Desktop walks you through setting a password. Do this before anything else.
- Flip the staking switch next to the lock. A password box opens. Tick "Unlock for Staking only"; this greys out the "Unlock timeout" menu because a staking-only unlock has no timeout. Enter your password and confirm.
- Read the switch's tooltip. "Staking enabled" means you are done. "Wallet locked" means the unlock did not go through. Anything else is the node's reason for not staking yet: "Coins maturing" (wait an hour), "Not enough coins", "Syncing", or "Please restart client".
- Watch the "Staking Information" box on the overview page. It shows "Next reward" as a rough time, "Your Stake weight" in per-mille of the staking network, and "Stake percentage", the yearly reward rate. The estimate is an average, not a schedule.
With "Unlock for Staking only" ticked, the Desktop asks the node for an unlock that can sign stakes but cannot send coins. Someone at your keyboard would still have to type the password to pay anyone. Turning the switch off locks the wallet again.
4BoxWallet
BoxWallet installs and runs the Divi node on your own computer and puts a simple window (or a terminal screen) in front of it. Your keys stay in the node's normal wallet file, so an existing synced Divi node is picked up as-is.
- Download the zip for your system from the BoxWallet releases page and unzip it; there is no installer. Desktop builds exist for Linux, Windows and Apple-silicon Macs. Intel Macs get the terminal version only. On a Mac unzip from the Terminal, not Finder.
- Pick Divi in the coin list and press Install. BoxWallet downloads the Divi node into its own folder and keeps it updated.
- Start the node and wait for the sync bar to reach the chain tip.
- Wallet… is the button for everything with a password: create a wallet, restore one, encrypt, unlock. Encrypt first if the wallet is new, then unlock for staking. In the terminal version the same menu is on the w key ("Wallet — encrypt, unlock, or check stake").
- Check the stake line in the Divi pane, or press w again in the terminal to see it. Before you screen-share, Settings → Privacy → "Hide balance figures" blanks every amount (h in the terminal).
Terminal keys: ↑/↓ or j/k to move, i install, s start or stop, l log, q quit.
The steps above come from BoxWallet's own documentation, not from a run on our machines, because the current BoxWallet is a fresh rewrite and its binaries change weekly. If a button is not where we say, trust the app.
5Wallets that can't stake yet
The web wallet (wallet.divi.domains), the browser extension and the Telegram wallet do not stake. They hold your keys on your device but have no node running all day to make blocks with. Staking from them is planned; until then you have two honest choices:
- Keep coins there for spending and move the part you want staking to a node wallet above. The move itself costs only the usual fee, but the coins start at zero age and need an hour before they can stake.
- Keep them where they are and accept no stakes. There is no penalty for not staking; your coins simply don't grow.
If someone offers to stake your coins for you, read Avoid scams first. The Divi project's own answer to "stake without running a node" is a vault, which keeps the keys to spend your coins with you.
6Check that you are staking
- In the wallet: IronDivi says
Staking Activeandgetwalletinfosaysunlocked; Divi Desktop's switch says "Staking enabled"; BoxWallet's stake line is on. - On the explorer: open your address on Explorer 2.0. A stake shows as a transaction from your address to itself that leaves you richer by the reward. With 10,000 DIVI expect one about every six months, so don't panic after a quiet week; Estimate your stakes tells you what to expect.
- Get told: Stake alerts sets up a Telegram message for every stake your address wins.
If the wallet says anything other than staking, go through Why isn't my wallet staking?; it covers every status word above.
