Which wallet should I use?

Seven ways to hold DIVI, what each one can do today, and a short answer for the most common cases.

1The short answer

One wallet, many apps Every wallet on this page gives you a recovery phrase of 12 or 24 words. The same phrase opens the same coins in any of them, so you are never locked into one app. Keep the phrase in a password manager: Proton Pass (free), 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Keeper or Apple Passwords. Back up your wallet explains why.

2What a wallet is, and is not

Your DIVI are not inside the app. They are entries on the blockchain, the shared ledger that thousands of computers keep in step. A wallet holds the private keys that let you move those entries, and shows you your balance by reading the ledger.

That has two consequences:

Some wallets also run a node: a full copy of the ledger on your own machine. A node is what lets a wallet stake. Wallets without a node (web, extension, Telegram) ask a public node for the balance and send the signed transaction through it. The keys never leave your device either way.

3What each wallet can do today

4The IronDivi wallets

IronDivi is the new Divi software, written in Rust. One codebase powers a full node, a web wallet, a browser extension, a Telegram wallet and Explorer 2.0. All of them use the same addresses and recovery phrases as the older Divi software.

IronDivi node (irondivid and irondivi-cli)

A full node with a built-in wallet, driven from the command line. It is the most capable option: it creates and restores wallets, encrypts them, stakes, and runs every vault command. It is also the reference the other tutorials use, so if a step does not work in a lighter wallet, this is where the tutorial sends you. Installing it is covered in Install IronDivi. Current version at the time of writing: 0.2.6 from source, 0.2.5 as a tagged release.

Best for: staking, vaults, anyone comfortable typing a command.

IronDivi Web Wallet

A wallet that runs in your browser tab at services.divi.domains/wallet/. Your keys are made in the browser from a recovery phrase and stay on your device. It creates a 24-word phrase, or you can choose 12, and it restores from either. You can receive, send and watch your history. Staking is marked "coming soon" in the app. There is a separate testnet copy at /testnet/wallet/, where practice coins are free from the faucet.

Best for: a first wallet, small everyday amounts, trying things on testnet.

IronDivi browser extension

A wallet that lives in Chrome, Edge or Firefox and lets websites ask you to connect and to sign, the way MetaMask does for Ethereum. Version 0.0.1 is not in the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons yet: you load it from the source repository in developer mode, and it starts on testnet. It does not stake and has no vault commands.

Best for: developers and early testers of Divi dApps.

IronDivi Telegram wallet

Open @divi_wallet_bot in Telegram. The bot answers read-only questions in the chat (/balance, /history, /tx, /receive) and opens a small app inside Telegram for anything that touches your keys: /wallet to create, /restore from a phrase, /send, /sign, /newaddress. The bot itself never sees your phrase. It has a /network switch between mainnet and testnet, and /faucet for testnet coins. Staking is "coming soon".

Best for: people who already live in Telegram and want to pay friends quickly.

5Divi Desktop and BoxWallet

Divi Desktop

The Divi Project's own graphical wallet for Windows, Mac and Linux, version 2.0.0 from diviproject.org/downloads. It bundles the C++ node, so the first start downloads the whole chain, and after that it stakes from the same window you send from. Vault commands exist but are typed into its debug console rather than clicked.

Best for: staking on a home computer with a point-and-click wallet.

BoxWallet

A free, third-party command-line helper by a long-time community member. boxwallet coin downloads the official C++ Divi binaries and makes a wallet, boxwallet start starts the node, and boxwallet dash shows a dashboard with sync, staking status and your balance in USD, AUD or GBP. It also has boxwallet wallet encrypt, unlock, backup and send. Builds for Linux, Raspberry Pi, Mac and Windows; v0.8.38 at the time of writing.

Best for: a staking node on a Raspberry Pi or a small server, without learning divi-cli.

6The C++ Divi command line

divid and divi-cli, version 3.0.0, are the original node, the one Divi Desktop and BoxWallet run underneath. Everything on this site that works in IronDivi has a C++ equivalent, and the tutorials show both where they differ. If you already run one, there is no need to switch to follow along.

8Where to go next

Whichever you picked, the next three tutorials are the same: create the wallet, encrypt it, then back it up. After that you can receive and send.

Common questions

Can I use two wallets at once? Yes. Restore the same phrase in the Web Wallet and in a node, and both show the same coins. Only one should stake, though, or they will compete for the same coins.

Is there a mobile app? Not a native one today. The Web Wallet and the Telegram wallet both work on a phone.

Which is safest? The one whose recovery phrase you have safely stored, on a device you keep updated. The software matters less than that habit.
